Sonoma joins in National Park 100th birthday plans

Free pop up event open to all|

America’s National Park Service is celebrating 100 years of stewardship of the country’s prized recreational lands with a birthday party on Saturday, Aug. 20, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Casa Grande Courtyard at 20 E. Spain St.

Displays and exhibits will be on display, both educational and with giveaways and handouts. Both Dave Duplantier, California State Parks community outreach manager, and an interpretative park ranger from the National Park Service will be there as well.

“Parks tell the stories of who we are, where we have been, and what we can be,” says John Golda of the National Park Service.

Sonoma State Historic Park will co-host the free centennial celebration with the National Park Service. Both will exhibit information on their parks.

Attendees are encouraged to visit Sonoma’s own historic parks: Mission San Francisco Solano, El Cuartél (the Soldier’s Barracks), the Vallejo Home and the Petaluma Adobe.

Park entry fees are $3 per adult, $2 for children.

Admission is good for same-day visits to each of these parks.

Duplantier will be hosting an evening hike at dusk on Friday, Aug. 26 on the Montini Trail and he will have an interactive booth at the Tuesday Farmers Market on Aug. 23.
