Ayesha Curry puts on a show at ‘Sunset’ celebration

While several other outstanding chefs gave demos at the new Sunset outdoor test kitchen during the magazine’s Celebration at Cornerstone Sonoma, Ayesha Curry was definitely the biggest draw to the two-day event.

The Toronto-born Curry, who happens to be married to the Warriors’ two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Stephen Curry, is a “lifestyle blogger” on how to find balance in one’s life. She actually has several messages for Millennials like herself, such as you can and should cook and be with family while living your own life and having a career at the same time.

Curry was aided and abetted by friend Amanda Haas, culinary director of Williams-Sonoma. The two spent many hours, days and evenings together developing recipes and practicing for Saturday’s demo.

They assembled themselves on the stage with Sunset’s newish Editor-in-Chief Irene Edwards.

As the surrounding standing-room-only space was filled, Edwards introduced Curry and Haas, both to make the sauces that went with their recipes of the day. Curry was to make a parsley-mint sauce to go with chicken, and Haas was to make her chimichurri sauce. But they switched and whipped up each other’s sauces.

This demo truly was entertainment. Both Curry and Haas are funny and played off each other perfectly, with Curry’s parents and two brothers taking photos and being supportive in the front row.

After they cleverly quipped their way through the sauces, Haas asked Curry, “What shall we do with all the leftover parsley and mint?” Curry immediately said, “Make a cocktail, of course.” So they “pulsed” the herbs in a processor with sugar and water to make a “simple syrup,” put it all into a martini shaker, and then Curry poured tequila into the shaker. And she poured several glugs worth. Next they dipped the rims of their tumblers into sugar instead of margarita salt, and served themselves what Curry dubbed “Tequila Sunsets.” Curry took several sips “just to make sure it’s OK.”

Curry’s book, “The Seasoned Life – Food, Family, Faith & the Joy of Eating Well,” will be out in September. Amanda Haas’ current book, “The Anti-Inflammation Cookbook,” was one of the most popular books sold at Readers’ Books’ book table.
