The Sonoma Master Gardeners present a free program on how to care for soil at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 23 at the Sonoma Valley Library.

Karen Guma will lead the talk, “Don’t Step on It, It’s Alive: An Introduction to Soil.”

Guma will cover the living nature of soil, dimensions of soil health, good and bad soil practices, compost and mulch, cover crops, the effect of the soil on the environment and carbon sequestration.

Guma has been a Master Gardener since 2014. She says she is a long-time hiker, backpacker and retired librarian with an enthusiasm for California native plants and habitat restoration. She explores the intersections of ecology and gardening with a view to keeping both the earth and the garden healthy.

The library is located at 755 W. Napa St.
