New artist in residence at Sonoma Community Center

Heather Wilcoxon will present talk, workshop on printmaking|

The Sonoma Community Center will host an in-house printmaking residency with visiting fine artist Heather Wilcoxon from Nov. 20 to Dec. 4.

During her tenure in the Community Center’s print studio, Wilcoxon will develop mono printing works and engage the community about the art of printmaking.

Wilcoxon will be available to work with community members during the center’s Printmaking Open Studios on Tuesdays, Nov. 27 and Dec. 4. Interested artists can purchase a card for the Printmaking Open Studio in the center’s office weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Wilcoxon will deliver an artist’s talk in the print studio on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at noon. The event is free to the public.

Wilcoxon will offer the workshop “Experimental Mono Printing and Image Transfer” on Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In the workshop, students will paint on plexi glass plates, using brayers and brushes, creating works that will be transferred through a printing press onto paper. The second day of class will incorporate photo transfers on top of some of the prints done the first day of class. Lessons will include a mix of demonstrations and time for individual hands-on experience. Scholarships for the workshop are available.

“Heather Wilcoxon is an innovator who creatively challenges students,” said Liz Treacy, arts program coordinator at the Community Center. “With Heather’s expertise, 700 square feet of studio space and two etching presses, there is always something interesting to see in our print studio.”

According to the Community Center, Wilcoxon holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work is on display in the Jack Fischer Gallery in San Francisco and has works in the permanent collections of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Triton Museum of Art, Rene Di Rosa Preserve, and Maine College of Art, among others.

Wilcoxon has taught mono printing, drawing and painting at the San Francisco Art Institute, U.C. Berkeley Extension, Kala Institute, College of Marin and the California College of the Arts. Wilcoxon was awarded the Distinguished Women in the Arts Award by the Fresno Art Museum, which includes a six-month one person show in 2019.
