‘Sourdough’ author to read in Sonoma

Kneading together the tech world and foodie fun|

Robin Sloan will be reading from and discussing his latest book, “Sourdough,” at Readers’ Books on Friday, Oct. 19 at 5:30 pm. “Sourdough” combines two unlikely bedfellows: the tech industry and the foodie scene.

The book follows Lois, a software engineer subsisting on grey nutritional paste, who ends up calling for takeout. Soon, the delicious meals – which include a hunk of sourdough – make her a favorite of the two brothers who run the takeout business. When visa issues force them to flee, they leave Lois with their sourdough starter. She soon finds herself drawn into the underbelly of San Francisco foodie culture.

The reading will feature a sampling of local sourdoughs.

Sloan grew up near Detroit and went to school at Michigan State University, where he studied economics and co-founded a literary magazine called “Oats.”

After college, he worked at the intersection of media and technology, first at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida, and then at Current TV and Twitter, both in San Francisco. His first novel, “Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore,” was a New York Times bestseller, translated into more than 20 languages.

With his partner Kathryn Tomajan, Sloan also produces California extra virgin olive oil under the label: Fat Gold.
