Sonoma Mission Gardens to host wine party

Sonoma Mission Gardens will host a wine party and raffle on Thursday, Aug. 23.

The event promises to be beautiful, tasty and fun, and replaces SMG's annual Limelight Hydrangea extravaganza – and for a slightly strange reason.

It seems a staff member of their supplier nursery accidentally cut back the Limelight hydrangeas so far that they no longer have flowers, so manager Lydia Constantini sent most of them back. Limelight hydrangeas' conical blooms give off a whitish-greenish glow, contributing generously to a moon garden of white flowers.

But never fear, there will be plenty of wine and nibbles, and a raffle to benefit the Valley of the Moon Children's Home garden. Raffle tickets are only $2. Your first one gets you in the door, and that has to be the best price of any event in Sonoma Valley.

The Valley of the Moon Children's Center garden provides a safe venue for kids brought in to improve their living surroundings and to provide supportive and educational services for the abandoned, neglected and abused children of Sonoma County. It is Sonoma County's only 24-hour emergency shelter for abused, abandoned and neglected children. The garden itself offers children a chance to nurture and grow food, primarily, and learn what to do with it to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Prizes include rose bushes, succulents in planters and attractive baskets of flower arrangements, some made by Australian Deborah Thomas, for a total of seven big prizes around the nursery.

Drawing at 6 p.m., so get there early enough to buy more raffle tickets. 851 Craig Ave., Sonoma. 938-5775.
