Sonoma’s Tuesday night market succeeding where others are struggling

As Sonoma wheels out its fresh-produce events, other markets are struggling|

The Tuesday night farmers market starts May 1, and the Friday morning farmers market suggests you pick up a hat to decorate for Mother’s Day from market manager Hilda Swartz.

Specifics about the schedule of entertainment on Tuesday nights and which vendors are participating this year can be found online at sonomaplazamarket.org.

New this year, you can be a “FarmFan” and receive a notification/reminder an hour or two before each Tuesday market with last minute news and offers.

The market will be open from 5:30 p.m. to dusk every Tuesday evening and run through September 25.

In the next valley over, the American Canyon Farmers Market has been canceled for 2018 due to low attendance over the last two years.

In other Napa news, the long-popular Vallerga’s Market has closed after 71 years.

According to the Napa Valley Register, Chris Vallerga Burns said the store began as Vallerga’s Drive-In Market.

Observers seem to blame the openings of Trader Joe’s, Whole foods, Target and Walmart opening in the area.

At one time the family had four stores, including one in Vallejo.
