Living sculpture class at Art Escape

Learning the art of kokedama|

Kokedama is a centuries-old form of Japanese garden art that has recently experienced a resurgence as a modern art form.

The word translates as “moss ball” and involves surrounding the roots of an ornamental plant with clay soil and then wrapping with peat moss, thus creating a living planter. The resulting decoration can be affixed to a platform or suspended in air. This traditional technique of presenting a plant specimen can be a personalized gift or the beginning of your own hanging “string garden.”

Art Escape is offering a class taught by kokedama practitioner Kendra Rimbach on Friday, March 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. Rimbach grew up in the Bay Area and now calls Boyes Hot Springs home. She left the corporate arena to pursue her passion for art. Inspired by her journey from office cubicle to Sonoma artisan, Rimbach says much of her work plays with lettering, color and plant life to evoke jubilance and positivity.

The class is $35 and includes materials. For more information and to register, visit artescapesonoma.com or call 938-5551. Art Escape is located in Boyes Hot Springs at 17474 Sonoma Highway.
