Brunch on Bald Mountain benefit hike delayed

One of the major fundraisers for Team Sugarloaf, "Brunch on Bald Mountain," was originally scheduled for Saturday, March 17. But recent rainfall has delayed the popular hike at least for a week, to March 24, and possibly longer.

The hike to the highest point in Sugarloaf Ridge State Park is a popular, if demanding one, with a 1,500-foot elevation gain over three miles to the top. But the summit can also be reached via shuttle, so even non-hikers can contribute to the park's fundraising efforts and enjoy brunch on Bald Mountain.

The hike begins promptly at 9:30 a.m. from the end of the auto road in the park, where pre-registered hikers can begin the difficult 6.5-mile roundtrip walk to the summit of Bald Mountain. There a 360-degree panorama offers views into Napa, Lake, Solano, Marin and Contra Costa counties.

Wear sturdy hiking shoes and layered clothing. Everyone is encouraged to bring drinking water, an unbreakable mug or cup, personal utensils and a cloth napkin. Hikers will return to the parking lot at approximately 1 p.m.

Non-hikers can also participate by taking a shuttle to the top, but both walkers and riders can enjoy a tasty brunch with the view. Shuttle rides begin at 10 a.m. and return by 12:30 p.m.

The hike is not recommended for small children or those not accustomed to hiking. Children age 9 and under are required to ride with accompanying paid adult. Children age 9 and under are free.

Cost is $35 per adult, $10 per child; non-hikers pay $60 for the shuttle. Reservations will be required via brownpapertickets.com.

Money raised from the hike will be used to rebuild fire-damaged trails, said Myers, making participation this year all the more important.
