A lecture and the chance to take a class from Toru Sugita|

Japanese printmaker Toru Sugita will give a talk about his career and the range of his printmaking experience on Thursday, March 15 at 7 p.m. as part of Sonoma Community Center’s monthly Artist Lecture Series. Sugita will also introduce his upcoming two-day workshop at the center, “Engaging Wood Engraving,” which is scheduled for April 21 to 22.

Sugita shows his work throughout the United States, Europe, Japan and Latin America. He is known for his black-and-white intaglio and wood-engraving prints which feature strong architectural elements. He received a master’s degree in fine arts in printmaking from San Francisco State University and he illustrated “Floating Lanterns and Golden Shrines,” a book about Japanese festivals. He is currently a faculty member in charge of the printmaking programs at Diablo Valley College.

The center’s Artist Lecture Series features a different artist every month. Future presentations will be given by artist Susan Heeringa-Pieper (April 25) and ceramicist Lynn Wood (May 15). To RSVP for the lecture or register for Sugita’s class, call 938-4626. SCC is at 276 E. Napa St.
