One-day Japanese woodblock workshop in Sonoma

SCC to host artist on Dec. 2|

Graphic designer Naoto Yamazoe, of the renowned Tokuriki Matsukyu Publishing design team in Japan, is in Sonoma at the invitation of the Sonoma Cultural Exchange to design their woodblock logo using Sonoma scenes and visual elements.

“Since he will be here in Sonoma, I thought why not contact the Sonoma Community Center and share his talents,” explains Sonoma Cultural Exchange co-founder Maki Aizawa.

“Here is your chance to design your holiday card and gift wrapping paper under the direction of one of Japan’s most preeminent graphic designers,” says Margaret Hatcher, special projects manager at the Center.

The Woodblock Printing workshop will take place on Saturday, Dec. 2, noon to 3 p.m. in room 208 at the Center located at 276 E. Napa St.

The three-hour workshop will include a brief overview of Japan’s graphic design tradition. Participants will have the opportunity to carve and print simple designs using small woodblocks or print from precut designs provided by the instructor. The cost of the workshop is $150 and $135 for members of the Center. All materials are included with each student receiving a carving-tool set to take home.
