Garden events around Sonoma on Sept. 16

Plants for sale and ridding your garden of pesky moles.|

Fall is the season to get most plants in the ground. Planting now allows their roots to get established in warm soil, and enjoy the free winter rains while establishing themselves before the summer heat.

Valley of the Moon Garden Club will have its fall plant sale on from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday Sept. 16, at the front garden of Sonoma Community Center at 276 E. Napa St.

A wide selection of plants will be on offer and club members will be available to assist with selection.

The sale will primarily feature perennials, hardy annuals, winter vegetables, herbs and succulents.

Also on Saturday morning, Sonoma’s Master Gardener Program presents “Conquering Gophers and Moles” by Jim Lang at 10:30 a.m. at the Sonoma Valley Library.

Lang will discuss the correct trapping techniques and the best traps to use and how and where to set them. Lang has been a Master Gardener for 20 years and presents regularly on various garden topics.

“Jim is a most knowledgeable and interesting speaker,” says Master Gardener Sally Sands. “Participants will learn how to deal with these pesky critters and be entertained, as well.”

Lang grows fruit trees, vegetables, dahlias, roses and other landscape plants. He has been a dahlia judge, an ARS Consulting Rosarian, ARS Horticultural Judge, past president of the Redwood Empire Rose Society, and a Master Gardener since 1997.

The event is free and open to all. The library is located at 755 W. Napa St.
