Free plane rides for kids in Sonoma

Volunteer pilots at Sonoma Skypark takes kids on a spin once a month|

Sonoma’s EAA Chapter 1268 gives free Young Eagles airplane rides every month on the second Sunday from 9 to 11:30 a.m., weather permitting.

On the ground, the pilot explains what will happen during the flight, review an aeronautical chart (or map) and complete a careful “walk-around” preflight inspection of the airplane.

Just before takeoff, the pilot will explain the interior of the airplane, including the operation of the aircraft door, safety belts, and instrument panel.

The flight lasts between 15 and 20 minutes. After the flight, the pilot is happy to talk more about flying and his or her particular airplane.

The Young Eagles program of the Experimental Aircraft Association was launched in 1992 to give interested young people, ages 8 to 17, an opportunity to go flying in a general aviation airplane.

The flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers. Since 1992, more than 1.9 million Young Eagles have enjoyed a flight through the program.

Young Eagles have been registered in more than 90 different countries and have been flown by more than 42,000 volunteer pilots. Young Eagle candidates should come to Sonoma Skypark 21870 Eighth St. E., accompanied by a parent or adult who can authorize the ride.

Call the Sonoma Skypark office at 996-2100 for information on local rides and visit the Experimental Aircraft Association Young Eagles site at eaa.org to learn more about the program.
