SCC opens entries for Fashion Trashion Barbie show

According to the Sonoma Community Center special projects manager Margaret Hatcher, if all Barbie dolls sold since 1959 were placed head to toe, they would circle the world seven times.

'Our new Barbie Trashion Fashion show this year is a fun way to keep her out of landfill and support the Center's ongoing education programs,' said Hatcher.

The deadline to participate in the Trashion Fashion Runway show has passed, but it isn't too late to participate in Trashion Week (March 18 to 26.) SCC is offering invites to all ages to adopt a cast-off Barbie doll, re-clothe her in tiny Trashion couture and participate in the city's first massive recycled Barbie exhibit.

'I am amazed at the variety of ways people are interpreting this concept,' said Hatcher. 'This exhibit should be very interesting.'

Applications are available at trashionfashionsonoma.org or at the Community Center. Entrants choose from dozens of abandoned Barbies (and Kens) donated by the Church Mouse. The application fee is $25. The deadline to apply is March 3. All dolls must be delivered to the Center by March 10 to be included in the exhibit. All dolls will be for sale in a silent auction. Unsold dolls will be returned to the designer.

The '101 Trashion Barbies' exhibit opens Saturday, March 18 in the Center's Gallery 212 with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Admission to the exhibit is $1. The exhibit will remain up through Sunday, March 26. Gallery 212 is located upstairs in the Sonoma Community Center at 276 E. Napa St.
