Chinese herbalism talk in Sonoma

Growing medicinal herbs to promote good health|

Author and expert in the field of medicinal herb cultivation, Peggy Schafer of the Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm, along with Sean Fannin, practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine, will lead a walk at Quarryhill Botanical Garden to highlight the many medicinal plants located throughout the property.

Schafer is a longtime herb grower and teacher in West Sonoma County who published “The Chinese Medicinal Herb Farm: A Cultivator’s Guide to Small-Scale Organic Herb Production.” In her book, Schafer discusses how to produce high-quality, efficacious herbs in all climates of the United States, grown and harvested according to classical Chinese tradition.

Joining Schafer is Fannin, who has worked in a clinical practice that is based on the Chinese medical and philosophical theories since 1992, and now specializes in Chinese herbalism, Medical Qigong and client education. Fannin says his primary interest is in classical Asian philosophy and its application to modern life. This has formed the basis for his clinical practice, teaching and writing.

Schafer and Fannin share the goal of growing the highest quality herbs with the best medicinal value possible to promote good health.

The walk will take place from on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon. The cost is $15 members and $20 nonmembers. Call 996-3166 to reserve a seat. Quarryhill is located at 12841 Sonoma Highway in Glen Ellen. quarryhillbg.org.
