Gardeners eye ornamental grasses

Hornback to chat about phormiums|

Bob Hornback will be speaking at the Valley of the Moon Garden Club’s Aug. 4 meeting about some of his favorite plants, including native grasses, sedges, phormiums, restios, cordylines and many others.

Slides will show these plants combined with other perennials and flowering plants in established gardens.

Hornback is the owner/founder of Muchas Grasses, a company that specializes in brokering, consulting on, and designing with ornamental grasses. He is particularly adept at replacing water-guzzling lawns with low-water alternatives.

He teaches horticulture at SRJC and also teaches it bilingually (English/Spanish) through a new program from the Graton Day Labor Center.

The meeting is at the Sonoma Valley Veterans Memorial Hall, 126 First St. W. in Sonoma. Meet-and-greet time is at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7.

Refreshments and a plant raffle follow the presentation. Members are free, guests pay $5, which goes toward a $20 club membership if desired.
