Pet Tales from Sonoma and Pet’s Lifeline

Pet’s Lifeline still have over 40 cats in house who need forever homes.|

It’s been quite a soggy start to the new year. I hope you and your pets are all staying warm and dry. Please do take care of our furry friends in the cold and rain. I personally am not tired of the rain yet. And Doc absolutely loves it. I don’t know if it is his sense of four-legged duty to jump in every single puddle no matter how big or small, or that he gets dried off with a warm towel immediately after that attracts him to the rain, but he does not back away from it at all.

Speaking of dogs… Pets Lifeline is on an all out campaign to build our Dog Foster program this year. On Saturday, Feb. 6 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Vintage House, we will hold an informational session about how this program works. Dog fostering is such an incredible contribution to a stray or abandoned dog’s well being. Whatever time you can give a foster dog in a home helps to build their trust and shows them how to behave in a home. There are many facets to dog fostering which is why we are holding this informational meeting.

We will have people treats there as an enticement. Deanne Carr, Pets Lifeline’s shelter manager, and Lissette Valdez, our volunteer coordinator will explain the different needs and situations that may come up in a foster experience. They can answer any of your questions. If you would like to come check this out, RSVP to lissettevaldez@petslifeline.org or 996-4577, ext. 104.

We have our winter dog training classes starting up soon with Family Dog 1 followed by Family Dog 2 in May. We are also starting a new Canine Good Citizen program starting on Tuesday, March 22. This is a great start if you are considering becoming a therapy dog team and taking your beloved canine into a nursing home, a hospital or other facility. Go to petslifeline.org to register. Dogs can provide amazing therapy for people who are hospitalized because of dementia, alzheimer’s, severe physical disability, trauma or illness. I cannot say enough about how pet assisted activity and/or therapy needs to be developed as a serious treatment option for any number of maladies.

Our cat population is decreasing, but we still have over 40 cats in house who need forever homes. We are continuing our Name Your Own Adoption Fee special to make sure money is not the reason you don’t take home a wonderful kitty.

We have some sweet little furry felines just hoping you are their human. Because this year brought us an unusually higher number of kittens there is more cat love to go around. And just think, your adopted cat could be the next youtube sensation. Cats are the most watched videos on the Internet and for a very good reason. (I just recently saw a story about a cat who learned how to take his own selfie. Cats are very smart!)

OK, Sonoma women, it is that time of year to clean your closets and donate your unused handbags to Pets Lifeline. Our fifth annual Tailwags & Handbags is Friday, April 29 at Buena Vista Winery and we are starting to collect handbags.

Donate only gently used bags with no pen marks, tears or worn leather. We prefer high-end designer, vintage or one-of-a kind handbags for our collection. We will present them at the silent auction on the 29th. More information on the event coming soon, but until then, let us take care of those poor handbags living out their lives in the back of your closet never to be used again.

Until we meet again... peace, love and paws.
