In a well written and entertaining series of articles on California history being written for the Daily News by James H. Wilkins, Marin County journalist, the story of Gen. M. G. Vallejo’s romantic courtship and eventful and eventual honeymoon is told. The writer sets forth the first meeting of the gallant Californian with his wife, Francesco Felipa Benicia Carillo at San Diego, and tells how a civil permit for the marriage from the Mexican government had to be granted before the young officer could marry. A messenger was dispatched on a burro to get the necessary papers. ... Mrs. Eliza Shepard, of Glen Ellen, sister of the late Jack London, will leave Sonoma Valley Jan. 20 for Indianapolis, where she goes to undertake the important work of chairman of the committee on the endowment scholarship fund of the national auxiliary of the American Legions ... Mickey Gillette, popular radio star who is heard over KFRC, has been spending his honeymoon here at Fetters Springs with friends of himself and his bride. The Kottinger cottage at the Springs was the haven of bliss for the newlyweds.

When the new Matson liner, Mariposa, sails out of New York on her maiden trip on Jan. 15, for a cruise of the Pacific, her passenger list will be made up of approximately 300 New York residents, men and women of affairs, and it is expected that at least one-third of these tourists will visit the Sonoma Mission, General Vallejo home in Sonoma and the Luther Burbank home and grave at Santa Rosa. ... A. Beretta and Dr. A. K. McGrath were awarded first and second prizes, respectively in the outdoor Christmas tree contest of Sonoma, which closed on the evening of Dec. 30. ... The city council at its meeting on Wednesday evening, again took up the matter of placing a city license on outside firms delivering goods into the city from outside. The city clerk was instructed by Mayor Fred Bulotti to secure a copy of an ordinance with provisions for this license, which has already come up for the first reading before the city council at Healdsburg. Numerous businessmen of Sonoma, particularly the bakers, have been subjected to considerable competition by outside firms, carrying all sorts of bakery goods, confectionary supplies and the like into the city, and they feel that these competing firms should pay a license, in common with local merchants.

An important business change was announced the first of the year when R. D. Roberts, for the past six years manager of the local Safeway store and popular Sonoma businessman, bought out the Quality Market. The market was established by Louis Pellandini and was formerly located in the old Fitch building next to the American Trust Company. Several months ago the store moved to the new Bulotti building on Napa Street. ... Among local business firms who look for a decided pick up and revival of trade in 1935, is the Sonoma Mission Creamery. The famous cheese of this firm has been selling rapidly the past three months until the stock on hand is about depleted. Due to a shortage of milk since the rigid inspection of dairy cattle, Mr. Joseph Vella of the firm fears that his manufacturing plant will suffer. ... Monday night, Jan. 7, President Cedric Cutter will start the new year with frolic and fun. After the regular meeting, the Natives will gather around the banquet table to wish their newlywed brother, Victor Erlebach, happiness and prosperity.
