Peter Boccoli, famous ball player and Sonoma boy, accompanied by his chum, Newton Dal Pogetto, son of City Trustee Chas. Dal Pogetto went to San Francisco last Monday and enlisted in the army. Both passed a fine examination and were accepted. ... Oliva Maffei, who enlised in the Navy some time ago and was called for duty this week, was given a farewell party by his many friends Monday night at the Maffei home. There was music and vocal selections by the Petersons, toasts and speechmaking under the direction of Attorney Frank Sprague and a fine spread at midnight. ... President Fred Batto, of the First National Bank of Sonoma, reports that the US. Government War Savings Stamps will be on sale at the bank, beginning today. ... Ralph Evans, popular young telephone man connected with the local offices, was married in San Francisco Saturday last, to Miss Josie Kennell, the handsome daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. Kennell of this place. The romance, which culminated at the altar, had its beginning when Miss Kennell was one of the pretty switchboard girls at the local exchange. ... Wm. F. Clewe and Peter Basaglia went to Santa Rosa Wednesday and obtained their licenses for the handling of dynamite and explosives as required by the new law. Mr. Clewe can sell it to his customers for tree planting and other necessary purposes, if applicants will fill out blanks and leave their names at his store.

The Cloverdale Reveille is informed that this week a local vineyardist and winemaker sold his 1918 vintage, consisting of about 10,000 gallons, at 57 cents per gallon. The wine was bought for eastern shipment and will go to New York. This is the highest price reported so far, although some of the local winemakers are known to have made sales as high as 50 cents per gallon. ... Mr. and Mrs. Carl Dresel gave a dinner to a number of relatives Sunday last at the Union Hotel in honor of their 30th wedding anniversary. A fine menu was enjoyed and the esteemed pioneer couple felicitated on the happy event. ... Olive oil (imported) has been received by the Mission Creamery and is on sale at the following prices: Romanza brand by the gallon, $6.25; Traviata brand, half gallon, $3.20, quarter gallon, $1.65. ???... Trouble is looming up over the rural mail carrier situation again. The present incumbent failed to pass the examination required and a fully qualified appointee from Petaluma who came over to fill the job gave up the idea after a one day’s tryout over our roads. ... The modern store with plate glass front and up-to-date fittings which its owner, M. Boccoli has recently been putting in shape has been leased to James McElney and will be the new home of the Model Pharmacy. Mr. McElney believes he will have the ideal location for his drug store and will move about Jan. 1. ... Arthur Perle, of Kenwood, was among the 45 American soldiers who arrived at Letterman Hospital, San Francisco last week. The party left France, Nov. 12, the day following the signing of the armistice, and stopped enroute at Newport News, Virginia, for a brief rest. ... Here is good news for all the auto drivers and all who delight in taking a pleasure ride over the Black Point cut-off. Tuesday morning the highway construction forces of the state began working blasting away the big hill on the cut-off about a mile east of the Black Point bridge and will use the soil and rock for filling in the new highway across the marsh and adobe lands. ... Bloss Keechler holds the record for big mushrooms of the season. He picked one 9 inches in diameter and weighing one pound. Some farmer, Bloss.

Capt. H. E. Boyes, for many years identified with Sonoma Valley and the original owner of the new famous health resort Boyes Springs, died very suddenly in San Francisco last Friday of acute heart trouble. He had made his home in Vancouver for several years past but as enroute with his wife to Santa Barbara which he was to make his future place of residence. ... The Glen Ellen Womans Improvement Club whose fund for the Jack London memorial library is steadily growing will give another big affair for the worthy cause on New Year’s eve, at the Chauvet Hall. ... There will be special features at Fetters Theatre beginning tonight. A fine moving picture will be featured this evening with dancing to follow. ... A large class of children will receive their First Communion at St. Francis Church tomorrow morning and the beautifully impressive ceremonies will be witnessed by a large congregation. On Christmas morning, Rev. J. F. Byrne will celebrate the first Mass at 6:30 here. Glen Ellen will have Mass at 9 o’clock and at 10:30 the solemn high Mass will mark the feast of the Nativity. ... Mr. and Mrs. George Cassidy were among those who enjoyed the famous opera singer, Madam Luisa Tettrazzini at one of her recent concerts in San Francisco.
