Continuing their challenging preseason schedule loaded with tough nonleague opponents, the young Sonoma Valley High School varsity softball girls found themselves locked into another close battle Tuesday afternoon at the high school field.

Starting three freshmen, to go with four seniors and two juniors, including pitching ace Hannah Herrick, the Lady Dragons trailed a good Ukiah team 1-0 for four innings and had their chances to tie and possibly take the lead in two of the frames.

But Sonoma couldn’t push a run across the plate until the bottom of the sixth, and by then the visiting Wildcat girls had taken advantage of some costly errors to tack on two more runs and eventually leave the Valley with a 5-1 win.

Herrick turned in another solid pitching effort in taking the loss for the Lady Dragons, going the distance and yielding just two earned runs, while scattering eight hits, striking out five and walking two.

Pacing Sonoma were senior Amber Rose’s two-for-three with a run scored; senior Lindsey Rocha and frosh Bella Fanucchi’s two-for-four each; junior Shauny McVeigh’s one-for-three with an RBI; frosh Malena Mackey’s one-for-one; and Herrick’s one-for-three.

The Lady Dragons, who hosted nonleague Cardinal Newman yesterday – results not available at presstime – will open their Sonoma County League season against longtime rival Analy at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, in Sebastopol.
