Taking the first stride in their quest for a fourth-straight Sonoma County League title, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity volleyball girls opened their SCL season Tuesday night in Pfeiffer Gym with a convincing win over longtime rival Petaluma.
While both teams have battled down to the final match the past two years to decide who dons the SCL crown, the three-time defending SCL champion Lady Dragons extended their winning pattern over visiting Petaluma by seizing the first two sets by identical 25-18 scores, then taking the third set 25-23 for the match victory.
Comprising Sonoma’s varsity volleyball roster – directed by head coach Chelsea Scott and assistant coaches Mindy Wiley and Haley Ross – are seniors Mackenzie Albrecht, Hannah Herrick, Cheyenne McCambridge, Ciara Smith and Delaney Swanson; juniors Courtney Cogbill, Carlie Vollert and Sami Von Gober; sophomores Sydney Eckhert, Jenna Mak and Kiara Miles; and freshman Layla Schoeningh.
Leading Sonoma past the Trojan girls were Albrecht’s 31 assists, 21 digs, four kills and three blocks; Swanson’s 15 kills, 12 digs, four serving aces and one block; Miles’ 15 digs, three kills and three blocks; Mak’s nine digs, six kills and two blocks; Smith’s four kills and two blocks; Von Gober’s four digs and one ace; Herrick’s three kills and two blocks; and McCambridge’s three digs.
The Lady Dragons play two other longtime SCL foes, starting with El Molino in Forestville on Tuesday, Sept. 23, and then hosting Analy at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25, in Pfeiffer Gym.
Sonoma’s junior varsity volleyball girls will host their annual Greg Paganini Invitational Tournament, which benefits the Greg Paganini Scholarship Fund, in Pfeiffer Gym beginning at 9 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 20.
