Lady Dragons overwhelm Piner

Though the Sonoma County League season is only three games into the 12-game schedule, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball girls are off to a strong start with three straight wins, including a message-sending triumph over visiting defending champion Petaluma in the SCL opener.

After last Friday's runaway home victory over El Molino, the Lady Dragons traveled to Santa Rosa Wednesday night and, after launching to a 22-4 first-quarter advantage, they rocketed past Piner for a one-sided 68-9 triumph.

Sonoma was led to the SCL rout by junior Delaney Swanson’s 16 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists; junior Ciara Smith’s nine points, nine rebounds and four blocks; junior Mackenzie Albrecht’s eight points and 13 rebounds; juniors Shelby Camilleri and Alexa Hall's eight points and four rebounds each; senior Giana Monterosso's six points, eight assists and four rebounds; junior Hanna Lemaire’s six points, three rebounds and two steals; and junior Sierra Lilly's four  points and junior Laryssa Baker's three.

The Lady Dragons return to Santa Rosa to play SCL foe Elsie Allen tonight, before they host this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day SCL versus North Bay League Challenge in Pfeiffer Gym on Monday, Jan. 20.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day team matchups and tipoff times include Analy (SCL) and Casa Grande (NBL) at 10:30 a.m.; Piner (SCL) and Rancho Cotate (NBL) at noon; Healdsburg (SCL) and Windsor (NBL) at 1:30; Elsie Allen (SCL) and Ukiah (NBL) at 3; Petaluma and Montgomery (NBL) at 4:30; and host Sonoma and Maria Carrillo (NBL) at 6 p.m.
