Officially tipping off their winter sports 2013-14 season in the wake of playing annual Foundation and Alumnae games, which didn’t count on their record, Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity basketball girls faced Sir Francis Drake Saturday night in Pfeiffer Gym and took early command of the nonleague action.

The Lady Dragons controlled both the paint and the glass by pounding in the post and hauling down the rebounds, and were aggressive in drawing fouls and making free throws. Unfortunately, they couldn’t consistently convert from the field, which enabled visiting Drake to stay in striking distance and trail only 35-27 after three quarters.

But Sonoma stepped up its defensive play, which pushed the offense and fueled a 15-8 final-period run that resulted in a 50-35 victory.

Leading the Lady Dragons were junior Mackenzie Albrecht’s double-double of 15 points – including nine of 12 converted free throws – and 14 rebounds, to go with two steals and two assists; junior Hanna Lemaire’s 10 rebounds, nine points and three steals; senior Megan Neely’s eight points and three rebounds; junior Ciara Smith’s five rebounds, four points, two blocks and two assists; junior Alexis Hall’s five points; senior Gianna Monterosso’s four points, four rebounds and four steals; sophomore Bella Bollman’s three points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals; and junior Shelby Camilleri’s three rebounds, three steals and two points.

Sonoma’s girls will continue nonleague action by hosting Napa tonight in Pfeiffer Gym, with the freshmen starting at 4:30, the junior varsity beginning at 6, and the varsity playing at 7:30 p.m.

Then they host their 17th annual Dragon Classic, with the tournament running from this Thursday, Dec. 5, through Friday, Dec. 6, and Saturday, Dec. 7, in Pfeiffer Gym.

The Lady Dragons will face Terra Linda at 8:30 p.m. in Thursday’s opening round, preceded by Analy versus Vintage at 4; defending champion Montgomery playing Northgate at 5:30; Menlo-Atherton versus San Marin at 7.
