La Salette tops Murphy’s, wins Jack Benny men’s hoops playoffs title

In last Sunday’s Sonoma Valley Men’s Recreational Basketball’s Jack Benny (39-and-over) Sunday Night League playoffs title game at the Altimira Middle School gym, La Salette used its team depth, height and focused determination to build a daunting 33-point halftime lead that left Murphy’s Irish Pub reeling in its wake.

Facing a near insurmountable comeback trail, third-seed Murphy’s, unfortunately, was denied any opportunity to get untracked as top-seed La Salette served up a strong overall performance, which culminated in a 74-44 victory and now reign as both the Jack Benny league regular-season and playoffs champion.

Leading La Salette, with all 10 players breaking into the scoring column, were Mike Kellison’s game-high 17 points, Marc Traverso’s 12, Kim Batchhelder’s 11, Aaron Smith and Don Conley’s seven each, Aaron Lockes’ six, Manny Azevedo’s five, Mike Glasbrenner’s four, Kenton Lewis’ three and Rick Cantor’s two.

Murphy’s Irish Pub was paced by Beni Comma’s 12 points, Jaime Svanda’s nine, Jeff Kellogg and Eric Jorgensen’s eight apiece, Dan Sooter’s four, Rich Tunheim’s two and Steve Mellinger’s one.

In Sunday’s consolation game, second-seeded Heffernan Insurance Brokers toppled fourth-seeded R&B Custom Builders 58-44, led by Cody Sanderlin’s game-high 20 points, Devin Ajax’s 15 with three treys, Brian Stephenson’s 10, Steve Matuszak’s seven and Pete Ahern six. R&B was paced by Al Martinson’s 19 points with four treys, Pat Neely’s 14, Kevin Schnabel’s five, Ron Luddy’s four and Chris Schnabel’s two.
