Judy Baker benefit slated for Sunday

By

A red beans-and-rice benefit for Judy Baker will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday Jan. 26, at the Sonoma Valley Woman’s Club, 574 First St. E., Sonoma.

Baker, a longtime resident of Sonoma and inveterate volunteer, business owner and member of Vox Populli, just started treatment for peritoneal cancer. She has a good prognosis and lots of challenges ahead of her. The first one is raising money for the deposit on the house where she and her husband, Garry, will be moving on Feb. 1. She also has to cover the cost of trips to the emergency room and medical tests that were performed before she had insurance.

Garry Baker will be cooking up his famous red beans and rice, mango coleslaw, cornbread, sweet potato pie and maybe barbecuing some ribs too. The no-host bar will be provided by the Sonoma Parlor of the Native Sons of the Golden West.

The afternoon includes a silent auction, music, dancing and friendship. Some of the auction items include VIP tickets to Transcendence Theater Company’s 2014 season, gift certificates for Health at Your Fingertips, and a stay at a vacation home in Lake Tahoe.
