Sonoma Valley swim teams split meet with Vintage High

As Coach Jane Hansen said earlier this week, in anticipation of Wednesday’s swimming meet at the Sonoma Aquatic Club, “Vintage may be the only team that can take us down.”

She was proved half-right as the Sonoma Valley swim teams split with Napa County’s Vintage High, as the Dragon girls handed the Crushers a 112-58 defeat, though the boys fell 100-70.

The girls’ win was sparked by junior Charlotte Hunter’s first-place finishes in the 200-meter individual medley (IM) and 100-meter freestyle, and her anchor legs in the 200- and 400-meter freestyle relays.

The relay times both were fast enough to earn NCS consideration, with 1:47.98 in the 200 and 4:00.44 in the 400.

Glorianna Ring, a freshman, also had a notable meet with firsts in the 200 and 500 freestyle, and a station on the winning relay teams. Other relay swimmers were freshman Sierra Pine and junior Sofia Portello, in the 200 freestyle relay, and Sophie Lucchetti, Hanna Wales and Maya Grajczyk in the 200 medley relay.

Pine took a first in the 50-meter freestyle with Portello right behind her. Lucchetti took first in the 100-m backstroke, and Wales and Grajczyk came in 1-2 in the 100-m breaststroke. Grajczyk won the 100-m butterfly.

The girls JV team didn’t fare quite as well, losing to Vintage 96-58. Coach Hansen singled out Lindsey Cullen, Emma Pressley and Anna Taggesell as key swimmers in this meet.

But when the boys took to the waters they came up on the short end of the 100-70 final.

Standouts included junior Dom Fiorito taking the 50-m freestyle (23:17), freshman Greyson McCaw winning the 100 backstroke with 1:01.62 (and getting second place in the 200 IM), and senior Ethan Smith winning the demanding 500-meter freestyle with a 5:38.96 time.

The boys also won the 400-m Free Relay, with 3:36.01, also an NCS consideration time. The relay team included McCaw, Smith, Jason Pine and Fiorito.

The split meet came a week after both Dragon teams defeated Casa Grande on March 6. In that meet the girls won handily, 124-46, while the boys slipped by with an 88-74 win.

Next meet for the “Water Dragons” is Friday, March 29, against Justin-Siena, again at the Aquatic Club at 4 p.m.
