Lady Dragons crush Elsie Allen

Lobos didn’t score until 4th quarter|

The Sonoma Valley High Lady Dragon cagers almost threw a shutout Friday evening when they played Elsie Allen.

While it took Sonoma 2-1/2 minutes to put their first points on the board, the Lobos didn’t score until the 6:21 mark of the fourth quarter. By that time, the Lady Dragons had a 44-0 lead on their way to a 49-3 win.

Sonoma started slowly and when senior Grace Cutting hit a free throw at the 3-minute mark of the first quarter, the Lady Dragons had only a 2-0 lead.

But then the shots started dropping and Sonoma ended up with a 14-0 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Lady Dragons stretched their margin to 29-0 at the half.

The third quarter saw more of the same, and at the 3:10 mark of the third quarter, when Cutting hit a bucket to make it 40-0, that triggered a running clock for the rest of the game.

When the Lobos finally scored at the 6:21 mark of the fourth quarter, the Lobo bench and fans erupted in a loud cheer.

Sonoma Coach Jann Thorpe was subbing five players at a time through much of the game.

Thorpe said games like that are tough to play.

“I always hate those games,” she said later. “It’s hard. You don’t want to be unsportsmanlike and run up the score or be too aggressive, yet at the same time we don’t gain anything from just sitting back and let them shoot uncontested shots.”

Senior Kayla Field led the Lady Dragons with 11 points as nine players scored. Cutting had nine, junior Sydney VonGober had eight, senior Alanna Johnston had six, senior Katie Stovall had three, junior Amy Stanfield and sophomore Annie Neles each had two and senior Shelby Decker had one.

The win gives the Lady Dragons a 10-5 overall record, and a 2-0 Sonoma County League mark.

The Lady Dragons hosted Analy Monday evening, results not available at presstime. Sonoma hosts El Molino Wednesday and travels to Petaluma for a Friday tilt.
