The Sonoma Ecology Center, in partnership with Whole Foods, Safeway, Wine Country Sanitary, and Starbucks, will facilitate a Martin Luther King Day of Service from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at the Nathanson Creek Preserve.

Volunteers are invited to join with Sonoma Ecology Center and other partners to support this nationwide initiative. It will be an inspirational day, working together for the benefit of the community. Without a lot of other MLK service days scheduled in town, the Sonoma Ecology Center is happy to offer this opportunity for giving back.

This is an opportunity for families, students, service groups, and neighbors to join together and show support for the shared natural resources, learn about land stewardship – and to have fun. Activities include planting native plants, mulching, pruning, weeding, and maintenance of the preserve.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a national holiday that calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our nation’s most pressing social and environmental problems. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, and moves people closer to King’s vision of a healthy, cohesive community.

Coffee and snacks will be provided in the morning with a warm luncheon provided at noon, at the conclusion of the work day.

This workday will be followed by a light lunch and celebration from 12:30 to 1 p.m.

Meet at the Native Plant Demonstration Garden, corner of East MacArthur and Second Street East.

Volunteers should bring work gloves, layered comfortable clothing and some rain gear just in case, a water bottle, and a reusable mug if you like coffee. Participants may get wet and dirty. Organizers will provide gloves if needed. Efforts to use reusable items are guided by a desire to reduce the overall event footprint. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

For questions about service day activities or to RSVP for a group of 10 or more, contact Jemma Williams at 996-0712, ext. 126 or email jemma@sonomaecologycenter.org.
