Home Winemakers name new directors

The Sonoma Home Winemakers have named a new slate of directors to head up the 2014 year.

Members-at-large include Dr. Jeffery Lopes and James Marshall Berry, treasurer is Rick Suerth, secretary is Cathy Murphy, vice president is Dennis Przybycien and the president for the year is Rich Treglia.

The Sonoma Home Winemakers, formerly known as the Valley of the Moon Dilettante Enological Society (VOMDES), are a group of home winemakers whose charter is to promote the fine art of making great wine and share information amongst its members.

“We know there are many wine enthusiasts and home winemakers here in the Valley,” said Treglia. “We need to do a better job of reaching out to them and letting them know we’re here and to join us in this fun group, so that will be one of the main focuses of the year.”

The group has monthly meetings that are open to the public and present educational topics such as sensory evaluation, handling chemicals in home winemaking and even food pairings. The group presents a yearly celebration where they pour their wine that is also a benefit for the Sonoma Valley High School Boosters, and over the years have donated tens of thousands of dollars to the boosters.

The group grows grapes in their private vineyards, acquire grapes from local sources, or just help out fellow members with their winemaking. The Sonoma Home Winemakers meet at 7:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month at the Vintage House senior center 264 First St. E., Sonoma. All interested parties are welcome to attend. Information on becoming a member can be found at sonomahomewine.org or by emailing grapes@sonomahomewine.org.
