A small historic statue of Mary, that has welcomed visitors to the chapel of Mission San Francisco Solano for more than 50 years, has been stolen from its permanent location above the chapel altar.

It is hoped that the 18-inch, painted statue will be located and returned to its place in the chapel where it will once again take its place alongside the historic art and artifacts that were placed in the restored Mission chapel in the 1960s.

With the loss of the statue of Mary, a matching statue of Joseph has been removed until the pair can once again grace the sanctuary area of the chapel and help to provide a setting that allows visitors the opportunity to learn about the California Missions and their place in California History.

Anyone with information on the location of the statue is asked to contact State Park Supervising Ranger, Vince Anibale at 938-9553, vincent.anibale@parks.ca.gov, or museum curator, Carol Dodge at 938-9566, carol.dodge@parks.ca.gov.

Mission San Francisco Solano (Sonoma Mission) is part of Sonoma State Historic Park, a California State Park.
