Historians discuss Indian baskets

Renowned historians Ralph and Lisa Woo Shanks will share their knowledge about artistic and cultural basket design and weaving when they speak about their new book, “Indian Baskets of Central California:Art, Culture and History,” as part of the Sonoma Valley Historical Society’s monthly lecture series.

Usually held at the Depot Park Museum, their talk will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Sonoma Community Center, 276 E. Napa St., Room 110.

The book features Native American basketry from San Francisco Bay, Monterey Bay, Mendocino, the Delta, and the Sierra. “Nothing better represents the cultural achievements and complexity of Native California life” than a basket, said Ralph Shanks.

Along with the stunning photography by Lisa Woo Shanks, the book contains a wealth of information on fine California Indian baskets from museums and private collections throughout the United States and Europe. The vast majority of these baskets are illustrated for the first time.

The book will be for sale at the lecture. Admission is $10 for non-society members and $5 for members. Seating is first come, first served. For more information, call the Depot Park Museum at 938-1762.
