High School tennis team needs support

Editor, Index-Tribune:

I am a current senior at Sonoma Valley High School. I have played for the girls varsity tennis team for three years of my high school career and I am now a co-captain for this fall season of 2014.

Unfortunately, year after year, the tennis team usually does not get the recognition it deserves. Although we pay for our $125 sports fee, the school’s tennis organization never has money to spend on the actual team. This year, we have been told that the usual school buses will not be available as our team’s method of transportation for away games. For our first pre-season match at Casa Grande High School in Petaluma, we were forced to choose only 16 out of our 23 girls to take to play at this match.

To maintain our team spirit, I, as well as the other co captains, have decided to design team T-shirts and have the tennis girls wear these shirts on game days. We believe it’ll bring a sense of unity that our tennis team needs. At the moment, I am the one paying out of my own pocket for these shirts, ensuring that we will get them prior to the start of the season.

We ask for donations to reimburse these costs, and possibly to also raise money for methods of transportation to away games. Shirts are $20.

We also have a car wash and bake sale coming up this Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sonoma Chevrolet, 687 W. Napa St.
