For both the first scoring matches and tournament action of the 2013-14 season, an incomplete Sonoma Valley High School wrestling team made the annual trek to Saturday’s Golden Gate Classic at George Washington High School in San Francisco and turned in a spirited, upbeat effort.

Competing in the 27-school field, the Dragon wrestlers battled their way to a standout fifth-place Golden Gate Classic finish, led by four-year varsity starter senior Harris Meglen, who went undefeated in claiming the 120-pound first-place medal with a 3-0 record, with two wins coming by way of the pin.

Earning a second-place medal for Sonoma was sophomore Dalton Elster’s 2-1 record with one pin in the heavyweight division; followed by four-year varsity starting senior Max Schimm’s sixth-place 2-2 mark at 160 pounds; junior Jake Randuch’s 2-2 sixth with one pin at at 138; sophomore Brandon Ruiz’s 2-2 sixth at 170; freshman Noah Bartolome’s 2-2 at 152; sophomore Austin Beltran’s 0-2 at 170; sophomore David Price’s 0-2 at 145; and frosh Victor Vazquez’s 0-2 at 126.

The varsity Dragons will next compete in the Healdsburg Duals tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 21 – the junior varsity Healdsburg Duals are today – and then will participate in the Coast Classic in Aptos on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 27 and 28.
