Deets Winslow memorial set for Saturday

Following the death of Roger “Deets” Winslow, who was recently killed in a boating accident at Lake Berryessa, there has been an outpouring of shock, grief and tributes in response to the tragedy that took the life of the Sonoma Valley High School wrestling legend as both an athlete and longtime successful coach.

To help deal with the loss of one of the Valley’s sports treasures, services and a memorial in Winslow’s honor will be held in Sonoma Valley High School’s Pfeiffer Gym at 1 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 23.

Also, Golton Hall, which is Sonoma wrestling’s “Dragons Den,” will be open for continued tributes and memories of Winslow to be shared by his family, friends and the vast wrestling community that he had a profound and everlasting effect on.

Taking over the established and multi-title-winning Sonoma wrestling program from his father and name-sake, Roger Winslow, Winslow continued the winning tradition, and made it one of the best programs at the prep level in the North Bay and throughout Northern California.

Winslow guided his Dragon wrestling teams to nine more SCL titles, as well as numerous tournament crowns, including the Sonoma-hosted Valley of the Moon Classic, and he also coached the Dragons to the school’s first North Coast Section wrestling banner as the NCS Redwood Empire Team Duals champion.
