Flu shot clinics set for Nov. 8, Dec. 6

The Sonoma Valley Community Health Center will host two flu shot clinics this year at Vintage House senior center.

The dates are Saturday, Nov. 8, and Saturday, Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. to noon both days.

Flu shots will be offered for a requested $20 donation, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. While anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu should get vaccinated, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends especially those at highest risk from complications of the flu receive a shot. This includes: Persons age 65 and older; residents of nursing homes and other long- term care facilities; those with lung or heart disorders or diabetes, kidney disease or weakened immune systems; pregnant women; health care workers; those who are in close contact with persons at high risk from the flu. Flu shots will also be available for children 6 months and up.

According to the CDC, the single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated d each year, but good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. There also are flu antiviral drugs that can be used to treat and prevent the flu.

Health officials offered tips to deal with the flu:

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when sick. This will help prevent others from catching your illness.

People should cover their mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.

People should wash their hands often. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
