Flood to perform Duncan dances

The Sonoma Theatre Alliance’s Sonoma Nights Showcase series will present four shows in October. The Showcase features intimate performances by regional artists in a variety of genres – music, staged readings, one-person shows, dance, and cabaret acts – presented on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, when the main stage production is “dark.” All Showcase events begin at 7 p.m. in Andrews Hall of the Sonoma Community Center, 276 E. Napa St., Sonoma.

On Tuesday, Oct. 21, East Bay solo dancer Lois Flood will perform the historical dances of Isadora Duncan, considered “the mother of modern dance,” a symbol of women’s emancipation, and a powerful supporter of human rights. Poet-artist Marjorie Lynn Wagner will share some of Duncan’s insights.

Born in 1877 in San Francisco, Duncan was influenced by the natural beauty of California, ancient Greek art and classical music. She defied the existing traditions of dance and society to create a revolution in dance and art, using the natural body to express the deepest human emotions. Her influence is still felt today.

There will be questions answered at the end of the program. Entrance is on a “pay what you will” basis, with net proceeds benefiting the Sonoma Theatre Alliance (STA).

On Wednesday, Oct. 22, “A Night of Story & Rhyme” will feature works written and performed by members of the Sonoma Writers Alliance. Both prose and poetry will be included, and there will be live music, wine and refreshments available. The evening will end with a talk-back with the writers. Entrance is on a “pay what you will” basis, with net proceeds benefiting STA.

On Tuesday, Oct. 28, Sonoma Readers’ Theatre will present “Fright Night,” a reading of haunting tales to set the mood for Halloween. SRT Artistic Director and voiceover artist Butch Engle will read Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Telltale Heart,” and Sonoma performer Jaime Love will be featured in the classic tale of suspense “Sorry, Wrong Number.” Tickets are $14 at svbo.org or by calling the Sonoma Community Center at 938-4626, ext. 1. Net proceeds benefit STA.

On Wednesday, Oct. 29, Sandy and Richard Riccardi bring their all-original all-comedy musical cabaret show to Sonoma. This extraordinarily talented duo, who have performed nationwide, serve up a delightful evening of lampoons, jabs and jibes on a wide range of topics – politicians, TV evangelists, Broadway musical wannabes, sexual orientation, the Twitter explosion – for mature audiences.

Wine and refreshments will be available. Tickets are $20 at svbo.org or by calling the Sonoma Community Center at 938-4626, ext. 1.
