FISH goes solar

FISH, Friends In Sonoma Helping, has added 50 solar panels to its two buildings at FISH Central on Sonoma Highway, because of an initial grant from the Scott Raymond Evans Foundation and a generous contribution from BDS Electric Contractors.

From the first report, the system is producing more kilowatt-hours than anticipated. Electricity generated from the solar system and the replacement of two old refrigerators with Energy Star appliances should eliminate the monthly electricity bill. This translates into FISH being able to redirect the $5,000 annual savings into its food program.

The FISH steering committee received three bids for the solar panels and they asked three independent community members to review the bids. It was unanimous that David Dikinis of BDS be awarded the contract. Dikinis, being familiar with the work of FISH, donated more than $4,000 worth of labor and services to this project.

In August, Barking Dog and 3 on a Match are partnering food and music to benefit FISH and raise funds for the needed Energy Star refrigerators. Sunday, Aug. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. Barking Dog will be serving three choices of barbecue sandwiches and a choice of hot or iced tea or coffee. Music will be provided by “3 on a Match” featuring ‘Smokin’ Joe Herrschaft and Paul Christopulos.

Tickets are $20 and will be available at the door or can be ordered via email at SonomaFISH@gmail.com.

Contributions for the energy efficient refrigerators can be mailed to FISH at P.O. Box 507, Sonoma, CA 95476.

FISH continues to supply emergency food, rides, clothing and rental assistance to residents of Sonoma Valley.
