Fall Dragon sports preseason underway

With the football program into its second week of preseason workouts, Sonoma Valley High School’s six other fall sports programs – girls’ volleyball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, boys’ and girls’ cross-country, boys’ and girls’ water polo and girls’ tennis and golf – began their 2014 practice sessions yesterday.

Sonoma’s girls tennis team is directed by head coach Mary Kate Dreyer and will start their preseason workouts at 2:15 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the high school courts.

The Lady Dragon netters, who open their season on Tuesday, Sept. 9, against El Molino in Forestville, are holding a benefit car wash and bake sale on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sonoma Chevrolet.

Sonoma’s football program is directed by head varsity coach Bob Midgley, with the Dragon gridders opening their season hosting Galena from Reno on Friday, Sept. 5, at Arnold Field.

The soccer Lady Dragons are directed by first-year varsity head coach Mike Verdu and they kick off their season on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Santa Rosa High School.

Sonoma’s volleyball program is directed by head varsity coach Chelsea Scott and the Lady Dragon spikers start their season on Tuesday, Sept. 2, when they host longtime nonleague rival powerhouse Maria Carrillo in Pfeiffer Gym.

The Lady Dragon golfers are directed by first-year head coach Dianne Lloyd and they open their season on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Petaluma.

Sonoma’s cross-country boys and girls teams are directed by head coach John Litzenberg and they will kick off their season on Wednesday, Sept. 3, by hosting their annual Alumni Meet at 5:30 p.m. on the Dragons’ home Maxwell Park course.

The Dragons boys and girls water polo teams are directed by head coach Flynn O'Brien and they begin their season facing Cardinal Newman at the Finley Aquatic Complex in Santa Rosa on Tuesday, Sept. 9.

Sonoma’s soccer boys are directed by longtime head varsity coach Pedro Merino, with their schedule not available at presstime.

Any student athlete wanting to participate needs to have all her or his paperwork – including current mandatory physical examinations, proof of insurance, completed emergency cards, signed (student and parent) code of conduct forms and paid fees – completed before practicing.

Paperwork, paid fees and proof of physical for all Sonoma fall athletes can be turned in at the student activities office.
