Ancient Future to perform in Sonoma

Two members of the Indian guitar and tabla ensemble, Ancient Future, will perform at the Sonoma Valley Library at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 19.

Ancient Future is an improvisatory group featuring world guitar pioneer Matthew Montfort accompanied by India tabla virtuoso Vishal Nagar.

The group presents an innovative and accessible take on Hindustani classical music and contemporary fusion, with renderings of raga and tabla. The program also features pieces from Ancient Future’s past recordings along with serenades from Montfort’s solo guitar releases.

Montfort’s performances on the scalloped fretboard guitar have earned him a spot on Digital Dream Door’s list of the world’s “100 Greatest Acoustic Guitarists.” Billboard magazine called the group “trendsetters” for their early contributions world music, which seeks to show how people from different cultures can grow by learning from each other.

Library manager Lisa Musgrove says, “Ancient Future played at the library in 2015 and 2017 and it was superb. The library loves to offer this beautiful Indian music that can’t be seen live here very often.”

The event is free at 755 W. Napa St.
