Mini Reel Film Fest preview event in Sonoma

‘Atlantic Salmon: Lost at Sea’ and ‘Beyond the River’ to be screened|

A Freedom Week Mini-Reel film event, hosted by the Sonoma International Film Festival, is set for Saturday, Nov. 11 at the Reel Fish Shop & Grill. The doors open at 10 a.m. and the last film will finish by 4 p.m.

The event offers a preview of two films that will be screened at the March 21-25 Sonoma International Film Festival.

All first responders are invited to attend for free. Call 933-2600 to reserve seating.

Saturday’s event will begin with a breakfast of The Reel Egg Scramble with bacon, country potatoes, tortillas, salsa, coffee and tea.

The documentary film, “Atlantic Salmon: Lost at Sea” will be screened in the morning, followed by a lunch of sticky ribs and chicken wine karrage.

“Lost at Sea” takes the viewer on an epic journey through the oceanic kingdom of the Atlantic Salmon - the king of fish - in an attempt to unravel the mystery of their life at sea. Populations of salmon are plummeting to critical levels, even going extinct in some southern rivers. Despite conservation efforts worldwide, populations continue to fall. The cause is mortality at sea. For the very first time, using the latest DNA technology, scientists are able to track the salmon from the rivers, through the estuaries and into the vast North Atlantic and back again in hopes of finding an answer before it is too late.

Filmed in high definition video, “Lost at Sea" travels from the rivers of Europe and North America to the vast waters of the North Atlantic and the rich feeding grounds around Greenland. Presented as a mystery, the viewer is on board the Irish research vessel, the Celtic Explorer, as it heads north to follow the salmon on their migration towards the arctic and experience the exciting discoveries being unraveled at sea.

A short film program will immediately go on after lunch and the day’s program will wrap with the film, “Beyond the River.”

Inspired by a true story, the narrative feature is about the pair who won gold in the 2014 Dusi Canoe Marathon.

Duma is a talented young man who feels trapped by his surroundings and finds himself on the wrong side of the law. After a near miss with the cops, he finds an escape in the world of canoeing, an old passion of his. Steve is a nine-time Dusi gold medalist whose marriage is on the verge of collapse. His passion for the sport is fueled by his wanting to escape from something in his past that continues to haunt him.

“Beyond the River” delivers a nail-biting adventure story about the triumph of the human spirit.

Tickets for the day of food and film are $75, per person, all inclusive.
