Lynn Freed at Readers’ Books in Sonoma

New collection of essays is entitled “The Romance of Elsewhere”|

Local author Lynn Freed will be reading from her new collection of essays at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Readers’ Books. Her new collection is titled, “The Romance of Elsewhere.”

Freed says that as a child, her mother claimed she had “itchy feet” as she was always ready to be somewhere else. According to press materials, it is travel literature as memoir – addressing everything from commitment to marriage, job or airline ticket, to revisiting Disneyland, to cancer, to how aging affects writing.

“This is a joyous celebration of a life fully lived,” says Rosie Lee of Readers’ Books.

Freed was born and grew up in Durban, South Africa. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. in English Literature from Columbia University.

After moving to San Francisco, she wrote her first novel, “Heart Change,” (republished as “Friends of the Family”). Since then, she has published six more novels, a collection of short stories, and two collections of essays.

Freed’s short fiction and essays have appeared in Harper’s, the New Yorker, the Atlantic Monthly, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Vogue, among others. She has received grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. She is Professor Emerita of English at the University of California in Davis.

Readers’ Books, is located at 130 E. Napa St.
