Cartoon princesses get royal treatment at Green Center

Free outdoor screenings of ‘Mermaid’ and ‘Moana’ this Saturday|

It’s a royal double feature this Saturday, July 22, as the Green Music Center offers up two outdoor screenings of Disney princess classics – “The Little Mermaid” and “Moana.”

Showing on the Weill Lawn with “curtains” rolling at 5 p.m., the free screenings are a perfect way to beat the evening heat this weekend.

The 1989 “Little Mermaid” follows the plight of Ariel, daughter of the underwater mer-folk overlord Triton, who yearns to “scale” to new heights by becoming human in the hopes of winning the love of a hunky land-lubber. But to do that, she must give her beautiful voice to Ursula the sea witch. Can Ariel’s pals Flounder, Scuttle and the gang help save the day?

The second movie on the bill is “Moana,” last year’s Oscar-nominated island-set movie about the strong-willed daughter of the chief of a Polynesian tribe. When her island is beset with blight, Moana sets sail in search of Maui, a legendary demigod who may hold the key to saving her people.
