Actors from 20 to 70 should consider trying out.|

Are you ready for your close-up? Ever yearned for the spotlight? Sonoma Arts Live is auditioning actors for two upcoming plays, and thespians from ages 20 to 70 are needed.

“The Spitfire Grill” is a musical with a large cast that chronicles the misadventures of Percy Talbot, a strong-minded parolee seeking a fresh start. She heads off to Wisconsin, where she finds the welcome tepid, at best. The local sheriff puts Percy to work at the Spitfire Grill, where she proves herself to be the precise catalyst the struggling town needs.

Auditions for “The Spitfire Grill” are from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 27, at the Community Center; candidates should prepare two contrasting one-minute monologues and come to the audition prepared to sing. “The Rainmaker” is a romantic comedy, set in a western state in a time of severe drought. The Curry family has begun to despair as their crops and cattle wither and die when a young charlatan arrives on the scene, promising to make it rain for $100. His infectious joy and unshakeable confidence prove to be the tonic the whole family needs, and despite the ruse, a kind of solution. When it does finally rain, the reversal stands in as a metaphor for the family’s struggle itself, allowing them to embrace the transformational power of self-belief.

Auditions for “The Rainmaker” are from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, in the Community Center; candidates should prepare two contrasting one-minute monologues and be prepared to read from the script (on the SAL website). For an audition appointment, email sue@sonomaartslive.org.

“The Spitfire Grill” is scheduled to run from Sept. 7 to 24, and “The Rainmaker” takes the stage Oct. 13 to 29.
