Sonoma United Methodist Church is presenting a concert titled, “Jef Labes: A Half Century of American Music” on Sunday, April 30, at 3 p.m.

Labes’ music career started in New York in 1967, and has taken him on the road with such luminaries as Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Jesse Colin Young, on retreat in the Holy Land, to TV shows such as “Saturday Night Live,” creating scores for many animated TV shows, composing songs for numerous musical theater works, and performing in Bay Area spots such as the Claremont Hotel, the Sonoma Mission Inn, Jo Lococo’s, Marin Joe’s and Oakland’s renowned piano bar, the Alley. Along the way he taught piano to many students and for 20 years taught vocal music in public schools in Marin and Contra Costa counties.

Admission is free, though a “love offering” will be collected at the concert. Labes’ wife, Eva, is diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, aka Reflexive Systemic Dystrophy. This is a rare illness that is debilitating to Eva and accompanied by expensive medical treatment.

All funds raised at this concert will go directly to support Eva’s medical treatment and the Labes’ family.

The concert will feature a wide variety of music from jazz to pop to television themes and even audience requests.

A dessert reception will follow the concert. For more information, call the church office at 996-2151
