The end of summer meets “The Endless Summer” as Sonoma Valley Museum of Art's “Surf Craft: Design and the Culture of Board Riding” exhibit winds up its run this weekend.

SVMA is presenting three surf-related events, ranging from a classic surf movie (Bruce Brown's “The Endless Summer”), a Surf Craft family make-in and an appearance and reading by Christian Beamish, surfer, sailor and author of “The Voyage of the Cormorant.”

Brown's groundbreaking film about the quest for the perfect wave became a rallying cry for a generation of young surfers. “The Endless Summer” celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and Sonoma Valley Museum of Art will present the “director's special edition” of the film at the Sebastiani Theatre on Friday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at SVMA in advance or at the door of the Sebastiani Theatre.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m, a Surf Craft Family Make-In, will offer surf-inspired art making. Art and craft stations will be set up with various materials and attended by local artists and craftspeople.

At 3 p.m., writer/surfer/shaper/sailor/boat builder and fisherman Christian Beamish will read from his book, “The Voyage of the Cormorant: a sea-faring, surf-adventure tale.” Beamish built an 18-foot Shetland Isle beach boat, Cormorant, in his San Clemente garage, and in 2009, took it on a three-month, solo sailing/surfing expedition down the Pacific coast of Baja, powered only by sail and oars.

The Cormorant will be on view at the Museum during his reading. Immediately following the closing of the “Surf Craft” exhibition, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, the virtuoso violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn will perform selected classical shorts at SVMA on her red Stradivarius made famous in the award-winning film, “The Red Violin.”

The event begins with cocktails and passed hors d'oeuvres prepared by Catherine Venturini of Olive and Vine, followed by the performance and a reception with an opportunity to meet the artist. Reservations for all events can be made at svma.org or by calling 939-7862.
