Surf flick ‘Idiosyncrasies” screens in Sonoma on Aug. 19

Curious about the surfer psyche? A film not to miss.|

A film screening on Friday night at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art provides a peek inside the surfing ethos through profiles of six eccentric and committed surfers. Director Patrick Trefz captures the essence of the surfer's life, through the profiles of surfers he's known over the years, including “Surf Craft” exhibit curator Richard Kenvin. The film received five out of five stars from SurfNet, natch.

The full-length feature, “Idiosyncrasies,” focuses on what's behind some of surfing's most influential underground individuals. After the screening at the museum, Trefz will stay on to answer questions from the audience.

“Over the last two decades, these are some of the characters that I have met and known,” says Trefz, who shot his film in Australia, Hawaii and California. “The attitudes they've had toward life and surfing were, I thought, inspiring,” he said.

Trefz is an artist, documentary filmmaker and action photographer, who has directed the feature films “Thread” (2007) and “Idiosyncrasies,” as well as various shorts, music videos and independent projects. His photography has been featured nationally and internationally in publications such as Surfer, Big, Geo and the New York Times. His publications include: “Santa Cruz: Visions of Surf City,” “Thread” and “Surfers' Blood.” He lives in Santa Cruz and is currently working on a film adaptation of “Surfers' Blood,” as well as a full-length documentary on Jim Denevan's “Outstanding in the Field.”

Tickets to the 8 p.m. screening on Aug. 19 are $17 general admission or $12 for museum members. The price includes admission to see the current Surf Craft exhibition and a Lagunitas beer. Tickets can be purchased in advance at svma.org/calendar.
