The Sonoma Community Center will present a two-day oil painting workshop, “Luminous Still Life in Oils,” with Carol Smith Myer from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 6 to 7.

Students will refine their ability to discern and paint impressionist color changes of light and shadow on objects. Using the Hensche colorist method, Myer will give a demonstration in the morning.  Students will then paint from a still-life setup while receiving plenty of personal attention and guidance.

Henry Hensche was an artist and long-time instructor at the Cape School in Provincetown, Massachusetts, who was fascinated with nature’s light. He was chiefly interested in how color changes according to the source of light, the surfaces and surroundings that reflect it, the atmosphere, the time of day and the season. His process involved refining simple large shapes into smaller and smaller variations that reflect these changes. His stepwise process offers a clear point of entry for painters working at every level.

Myer says she enjoys teaching this way of seeing to new and experienced artists. A Novato-based artist, she has traveled extensively to study with painters such as Camille Przewodek, Jove Wang, Milt Kobayashi and Carolyn Anderson over the past 21 years.

For more information about the workshop, call the SCC at 938-4626, ext. 1. Registration closes Tuesday, June 2.

The Sonoma Community Center is located at 276 E. Napa St., in Sonoma.
