Trashion Fashion

Making a fashion statement out of refuse|

The Sonoma Community Center’s fifth annual Trashion Fashion Show will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at the Sonoma Valley Veterans Memorial Building, 126 First St. W.

More than 30 professional and amateur designers are creating original wearable art for the show by turning recycled materials and cast-off junk into Haute Couture, and the creations are modeled in a live runway fashion show.

“So much of what gets thrown away on a daily basis can be reused or repurposed,” said Toni Castrone, the community center’s executive director. “The Trashion Fashion Show is a powerful reminder that creativity can transform what we normally think of as junk into something remarkable.”

Sonoma Community Center produces the Trashion Fashion Show with presenting sponsor Sonoma Market, and additional support from Republic of Thrift, and Sonoma Garbage Collectors. Additionally, because of a grant from the Sonoma Plein Air Foundation, a group of children and teens from the Sonoma Mentoring Alliance receive scholarships to attend Sonoma Community Center’s Trashion design class and create an entry for the show.

A team of performers and volunteers helps coordinate the event under the direction of Sonoma Community Center’s special projects manager Margaret Hatcher. Hatcher’s influence is seen in many of the Center’s most stunning public events, including the Fourth of July Parade and Celebration, the Dia de Los Muertos Altar, and the Holiday Follies Review on the Rotary Stage.

The Sonoma Community Center conceived of the Trashion Fashion Show in 2010 as part of its Center for Sustainability initiative, which promotes sustainable communities in Sonoma Valley by providing environmental education and community-based programs. Free and low-cost workshops offered by the center cover such topics as water conservation, water-wise gardening, and solar energy, and an annual film series in partnership with Transition Sonoma Valley.
