Renowned sitar master Peter van Gelder will play music of India at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the Sonoma Valley Library.

He will be accompanied by Samrat Kakkeri, tabla player from Hyderabad, India. They will perform a raga and talk about the instruments and the musical form of raga and tala (the rhythmic pattern used in Indian classical music).

A well-known figure to Bay Area concertgoers, van Gelder has performed with world famous musicians including Zakir Hussain, Chitresh Das and Lalgudi Krishnan. He has composed and collaborated on music for films and dance dramas. His lucid sitar style has won praise from audiences around the world, from Europe to the Fiji Islands as well as India and China. He has given concerts and lectures in universities throughout America.

Samarat Kakkeri has devoted his life to the art of tabla. He was considered a child prodigy and received acclaim as an accomplished tabla player from an early age. He has performed both as a solo artist and accompanying artist all over India.

The event is free and open to all. Seating is limited and is first-come, first-served. The Sonoma Valley Friends of the Library provided the financial support to make this event possible.
