The curtain rises on the musical comedy “Guys & Dolls” tonight, Friday, Jan. 30, at Sonoma Valley High School’s Little Theatre.

The student production will run for two weekends.

“Guys & Dolls” follows Salvation Army crusaders and high rollers from the streets of Time Square to Havana. Nathan Detroit, who is permanently engaged to psychosomatic showgirl Miss Adelaide (Regan Headley, Gianna Sanfilippo), will be forced to fold Detroit’s Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game unless he wins a bet from slick high roller Sky Masterson (Cian Lacy, Max Szanyi). When Sky gambles that he can woo any “doll,” Nathan counters that Sky will not be able to convince an upright but uptight missionary named Sarah (Liana Morgan, Kudra Wagner) to go to Havana with him. Sarah finds the rakish Sky very resistible at first, but eventually both Sky and Sarah teach each other a lesson on winning.

“Guys & Dolls” premiered on Broadway in 1950 and was made into a 1955 feature film starring Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando, featuring songs like “Luck Be A Lady” and “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ The Boat.”

The SVHS show is directed by Jane Martin and Janine Crowe, musical director is Barbara McElroy, choreography by Meredith Regan and Kate Leland. The creative team includes the art department with set design by student Kaylin Riebli under the direction of Aaron Anderson; costume design by student Nina DeClerq; stage management by student Lucy Houghton; poster design by student Amelia Eastin; and program and banner design by Andy Mitchell.

Performances will be on Fridays and Saturdays, Jan. 30, 31, and Feb. 6, 7 at 7 p.m. Matinee performances will be on Sunday, Feb. 1 and 8 at 2 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children, students, seniors and active military.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at Reader’s Books, 130 E. Napa Street, Pharmaca, 303 W. Napa St., and the Student Activities Office at SVHS. Tickets may also be purchased at the Little Theater Box Office 30 minutes prior to curtain.
